Lou Mixson of Hollywood shares this version, which originally came from "A Tablespoon of TooGooDoo, " a cookbook sold by St. Paul's Country Day School. "I have made a few changes to suit my family, " Lou says. Thanks also to Brenda Gibbs of Hollywood, who sent the recipe from this cookbook.
Put hamburger and onions in a large saucepan and cover with water. Cook until onions are soft. Stir meat and break up chunks while simmering (about 15 minutes). Pour mixture into strainer and drain. Put meat mixture back into pan and add rest of ingredients. Cook slowly for 1 hour, stirring often.
